Comix Connection put up a rad list of comics that women like, and I’m honored that they included Thor and the Warriors Four, given how good the company is! Check ‘em out, over here.

Thor and the Warriors Four #4 – Reviews!

Before I get into the reviews, I just wanted to thank everyone who picked up this book. Beyond what I had to do with it, GuriHiru made some amazing art, Colleen Coover did an awesome back-up, and generally, I was honored to be part of this project. So yeah, thanks for that, everyone, and I’ll see you back on the stands in September!

- Axiom’s Edge loved the issue, and said, “This was just a great, fun series written with just the right touch of humor and action by Alex Zalben with perfect artwork for this story by Gurihuru. If you haven’t read this series I highly recommend it in trade.”

- Comixtreme gave the comic 4.5 out of 5 stylized letters I’s (at least I think that’s their rating system), and called it, “…the best of the all-ages Power Pack series to date!”

- Gurihiru has a breakdown of their cover process for the entire series – as well as a look at what went into making issue four.

- Robot 6 on CBR sez, “Thor and the Warriors Four (the four-issue miniseries) came to a satisfying happy ending for kids and adults alike. Like a good sitcom, I enjoy the snippets of dialogue that Alex Zalben works in–case in point when Thor, Frog of Thunder; and Beta Ray Bill acknowledge each other as they head into battle (Frog: “Thorse”‘ Bill” “Throg”).”

- Girls Read Comics Too loved the last issue, saying, “I think that’s what my favorite thing about this series has been and why it’s been a success (aside from the sheer adorableness steeped in every panel) — that it’s still very much grounded in human emotion and tragedy… I love it so much. I forsee dozens of happy re-reads in my future.”

- By Odin’s Beard gave the issue four out of five beards, and calls out one moment in particular, saying, “The appearance of Jormungand provides a great opportunity for Alex Power to prove himself, though, and what follows is a great moment, one of the best I’ve read like it.”

- Hero Sandwich gives the issue a thumbs up times a billion, and says, “This was the best comic I got last week. Absolutely HUGE props to writer Alex Zalben and artists Gurihiru for this one — I haven’t had this much fun reading a comic book in ages.”

- 1979 Semi-Finalist says “Buy It!” and also, “Wonderful adorable totally fun stuff. Gurihiru’s art is just phenomenal (as is Coover’s in her tale) and Zalben’s writing is funny and right on point. Adorable. If you have kids, totally get this, if you just want to have fun reading some fun comics, get it even if you don’t have kids.”

And that’s it for right now, other than some chatter about Beta Ray Bill’s haircut on 4Chan, which I’m not gonna link to because it’ll be gone by the time you click the link. Anyway, I’ll update this post as more reviews come in! As long as they’re good. Or fair. Or offer me free cake. I’ll post anything for cake.

Girls Read Comics Too is Too Nice

Girls Read Comics Too just said Thor and the Warriors Four is their favorite Marvel series, which is way, way, way too nice. But you know, thank you:

Though series is an open definition, I’m taking it as a limited series versus ongoing titles (otherwise I’d just have X-Factor here again). If you’ve been reading my reviews for some time now, you know how much I love Thor and the Warriors Four. It’s aimed at kids, but there’s enough humor, heart and depth to the story as a whole that adults can’t help but fall for Power Pack. Plus, all of Asgard eventually gets turned into kids and you get baby Thor riding baby Beta Ray Bill. Could you ask for more?

Head on over to their blog, and tell them how awesome THEY are.

Thor and the Warriors Four #3 Reviews!

- First, another rad breakdown of how GuriHiru made the art for the issue.

- The Weekly Crisis sez about issue #3, “Can we just go ahead and declare this the best comic ever?”

- Comic Book Resources gives the issue four out of five stars, and says, “This issue had me laughing out loud more times than I can remember any other comic doing in quite a while!”

- Hero Sandwich gives the issue a thumbs up!

- Odin’s Beard, which has the best ratings system ever, gives the book 4/5, and says, “Zalben really knows how to write a book that’s truly an all ages story… This is honestly one of the best comics I’ve read in quite some time!”

- Girls Read Comics Too gives the issue 5 out of 5, and says, “I’m totally in love with this series, and will be horribly sad when it ends next month.”

- ComicAttack gives both issue #2 and issue #3 a 4/5, and says, “Another great couple of issues from Zalben as well, and he’s really doing a superb job at telling an interesting tale with a great all-ages vibe!”

Thor and the Warriors Four #2 Reviews!

Instead of doing one million posts, I’m going to lump all the reviews here. You guys are nice, by the way:

- But first, once again, Gurihiru did a wonderful recap of their artistic process on issue #2. Definitely check it out, at this link.

- Fresh Ink gave this a spectacular review, and even got a joke I thought was pretty well hidden – BUT CLEARLY NOT HIDDEN ENOUGH! Really, though, this was a nice one:

- School Library Journal, which is like, totally legit and whatnot, said that, “The Power Pack mini-series’ have been praised for being a true all ages title that can appeal to kids and adults alike, and this new series seems to be keeping that streak going.”

- Comixtreme gives Thor and the Warriors Four #2 a 4.5 out of 5, and says, “This is a truly great comic book.”

- Hero Sandwich gave the issue a Thumbs Up, “Very funny, very awesome, and much like Mjolnir, very much worthy of being picked up.”

- Four Panel Folly is nice enough to like this issue despite the fact they feel they owed it to me to pick it up. YOU OWE ME NOTHING. (Seriously, though, thank you): “There are certain notes a story has to hit for me to really love it. Zalben hits all those notes.”

- By Odin’s Beard said, “I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get a kid interested in comics,” and gave it a four out of five.

- The Q Review gives it a 9 out of 10, and says, “Reading this issue was akin to watching a Miyazaki movie: friendly and exciting enough to hook a younger audience, but attractive and intelligent enough to also appeal to their parents or older siblings.”

Thor Reviews 2 Da Maxx

- Comic Attack nicely says that, “If you are in search of a comic book with fantastic art, a great story, and an uber-cool vibe, then this is the book for you. Awesome book, and I can’t wait for issue number two to hit the stands in May!”

- …And Alert Nerd says, “Zalben doesn’t get the same level of kudos that Paul Tobin, Colleen Coover and Jeff Parker have for creating a great all-ages Marvel universe, but that’s due to change.” Which is totally awesome and flattering, but I think the Alert Nerd thinks I’m also Marc Sumerak and Fred Van Lente? Maybe? Anyway, you rock Alert Nerd – and I only hope I’m half the man Sumerak and Van Lente are.

- There’s also this podcast which talks about Thor and the Warriors Four #1, but I don’t know what they said, because it’s mostly an Iron Man commentary, and it’s a little hard to listen to w/o also watching Iron Man. For the record, awesome idea, and it makes me want to watch Iron Man again NOT JUST SO I CAN HEAR WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT MY COMIC, OKAY???

Slightly Even More Reviews

- Fanboys of the Universe sez: “Fun art, smart and witty dialogue and a surprisingly strong emotional punch!”

- And Hero Sandwich gave the book a thumbs up! I give them a thumbs up right back.

More Reviews? Sure!

…In which I probably should have just waited, or put these all in one post:

- ComicBookResources gives the book four out of five stars, and says, “From the introduction of the Power Pack on the opening spread to the “Told ya so!” ending, this is the way to handle an all ages read!”

- And The Renaissance Nerds said that, “As always Girihuru delivers a fun, dynamic comic with clear layouts and expressive characters. Zalben equals his artist with a funny, surprisingly heartfelt, issue.”
